Mapleton was developed between 1913 and 1919 and was eventually encompassed by its sister neighborhood, Borough Park.
The small community, now considered a sub neighborhood, is given recognition by the Mapleton branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on 17th Avenue and 60th Street.
On the border of Bensonhurst, it also contains Washington Cemetery, known as the largest inhabited Jewish cemetery in New York.
Brooklyn-born Norm Goldstein is retired, after working 44 years for the Associated Press, the global news agency, where he served as a reporter, feature writer, editor, author and administrator. He also worked for AP as director of Educational Services and editor of the AP Stylebook.
He graduated from Brooklyn College and the Penn State Graduate School of Journalism.
He currently lives in Brooklyn Heights.
